A step-up transformer boosts a low voltage into a high one.

We have more turns on the secondary coil than the primary to get a bigger secondary voltage and a smaller secondary current.

A step-down transformer has more turns for first coil than the second coil, so the secondary voltage is smaller than the primary voltage.
